George Lucas - Lucas Scraps Plans For Indiana Jones Cannes Bash

GEORGE LUCAS has stunned partygoers at the Cannes Film Festival by deciding against throwing a lavish launch party to celebrate the premiere of INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL.

The legendary moviemaker has ignored the French film festival's usual etiquette by snubbing a spectacular premiere after-party in favour of a comparatively compact 'filmmakers party' - with just 250 guests - after the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise is premiered at the event on Sunday (18May08).

The move comes amid rumours the film was panned by movies bosses in Los Angeles who previewed Harrison Ford's revival of his role as the whip-cracking adventurer, according to Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper.

And Lucas, who worked on the eagerly awaited film with veteran director Steven Spielberg, is seemingly trying to play down the hype surrounding the movie, in case it's a flop with film fans.

He says, "When you do a movie like this, people anticipate that it's going to be the Second Coming. And it's not. It's just a movie. You're not going to get a lot of accolades doing a movie like this. All you can do is lose."

Tim Janis, wHO has conducted the Czech National Symphony, the Kwazulu Natal Philharmonic, and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra in addition to writing his own medicine, studied piano and received a level in composition from the University of New Hampshire in 1991. He has cited composers John Williams, John Barry, and Hans Zimmer as major influences, simply has experimented with several forms of the nontextual matter, writing musicals (produced at UNH), synthesized pop songs with vocals, oodles for small independent films, and even area, jazz, acoustic, and surd rock-and-roll arrangements. Owning a record judge and studio, Tim Janis Ensemble, in Kennebunk, ME, has allowed the composer the exemption to proceed interacting with musicians from many genres, the fruit of which is seen in his across-the-board discography.

A prolific recording artist, Janis has released over 15 solo compositions, among them Etain (1996), A Thousand Summers (2002), Across Two Oceans (2004), and Coming Home (2005), as well as many Christmas recordings. His mold broadly concerns itself with potent and descriptive melodies, often regarding the ravisher of nature (for exercise, 1996's Along the Shore of Acadia, a rich tone verse form elysian by the national park), proving it the gross escort for deuce world video programs extolling the physical luster of the United States, Beautiful America (2004) and Coastal America (2006), both narrated by worker George Clooney. Janis also performed in a live special for PBS, 2001's An American Composer in Concert, with the American Symphony Orchestra, whom he conducted.

Believing that music lav be more than entertainment, the composer began his Music with a Mission jut out, with the determination of supporting understanding and consciousness between different mass and cultures. He has brought the all-female HIV-positive South African consort Sinikithemba to the U.S. to raise awareness about the AIDS epidemic there, performed a series of concerts in China to bridge circuit communication 'tween the two countries, and as of 2006 was still leading the Music in Our Schools unpaid worker program, which is meant to inhale elementary school students to create and study music.

Spawned by the fecund L.A. altitude metal view, Orgy adds attention-getting musical hooks to the familiar meld of crushingly loud riffs and electronic-tinged production. Formed in late 1997, Orgy consists of vocalizer Jay Gordon, guitarist Ryan Shuck, guitar synthesiser Amir Derakh, bassist Paige Haley, and drummer Bobby Hewitt. Shuck had collaborated on substantial with Korn star isaac Merrit Singer Jonathan Davis, spell Derakh had produced several records for already-signed L.A. bands, so it was no surprise that Orgy became the low gear band signed to Korn's Elementree subsidiary company of Reprise Records. Their debut record album, Candyass, was released in 1998. Their comprehend of New Order's "Aristocratic Monday" and irregular exclusive, "Stitches," straightaway pushed them into the mainstream. Madonna Talks About Turning 50 -- Sort Of, By John Norris

Among the repertoire of characters created by the inimitable Molly Shannon, one of my all-time favorites is Sally O'Malley, the spry, irrepressible quinquagenarian who likes to mix it up with the kids, shouting, "I'm 50! 50 years old! I kick! And I stretch! And I kick!"
Yes, she does. But alas, Sally doesn't kick, stretch, dance, perform or frankly look quite as good doing it as another woman about to celebrate the big 5-0 on August 16: Madonna. And what a year it's already turning out to be for her. She directed her first feature, "Filth and Wisdom," which, despite an iffy reception at the Berlin Film Festival, has supporters; she produced a documentary on poverty-ravaged Malawi and its orphans — and managed to raise upwards of $3.5 million for the cause at a star-studded Gucci event; and in March she was inducted into a little club known as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Of course, there's also last week's release of a new Madonna album, Hard Candy, which has drawn many raves. The record also, despite its triumvirate of contemporary producers (Pharrell, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake), has a decidedly retro feel in places, harkening back to some of her earliest dance hits. Suffice to say "Candy Shop," "Miles Away" and "Heartbeat" would not sound out of place next to "Everybody," "Borderline" and "Lucky Star." And as if to reinforce that point, Madonna's record-release show at New York's Roseland last week was replete with old-school touches: Kangol hats and dayglo on the dancers, graffiti projections and a vintage subway train for the finale.
Hard Candy also marks a page-turning moment for the biggest female star of her generation. It's Madge's last album for her longtime home, Warner Bros., before she bolts to a "360 deal" with Live Nation.
Anyway, might all of this make for a moment of reflection, of taking stock, of (heaven forbid) nostalgia?
Not if you're Madonna. The woman has never been much for such sentiments — and here's what it was like trying to draw her into the topic backstage at Roseland:
John Norris: With the Hall of Fame, with the Warner thing ending and with Live Nation starting — and with something happening on August 16 — do you look at it all as a milestone, or ...
Madonna: Define "it," please?
Norris: This year.
Madonna: This year has been amazing so far. That's how I look at "it."
Norris: Yeah, but not anything more than that? Nothing more momentous, or...
Madonna: Life is getting better.
Norris: No chapter ending, one beginning?
Madonna: [Looking at me quizzically, like I have two heads, and shaking her head] No, just continuing. Did you not hear the song I was singing tonight? "There's no beginning and no ending"? Yeah?
Madame Sarcasm is referring to "Give It 2 Me," one of the party-heartier tracks on Hard Candy and a lyric that I must admit I'd previously thought had more to with dancing or sex. But apparently it's more of a manifesto of sorts.
Another couplet from the same song goes "They say that a good thing never lasts, and then it has to fall/ Those are the people that did not amount to much at all."
Point taken, my lady.
Much to the music industry's delight, Madonna doesn't appear to be letting up on the live-performance front, either: Another tour is in the works for the late summer and fall. In fact, though dates have not yet been announced, chances are good that Madonna will celebrate her 50th birthday either in rehearsals for the tour or on the road.
For 25 years she has been the gold standard when it comes to arena-show dazzle, and there is no reason to think that won't continue. There is also no reason to think it won't make lots and lots of money: She has become as reliable in that department as U2 and the Rolling Stones. Speaking of whom, at Roseland last week, before launching into a rocked-up "Hung Up," Madonna busted out a little of the classic riff from "Satisfaction," then asked the crowd, "What, did you think you were coming to a Rolling Stones concert?"
On that note, last week a friend of mine (and rabid Madonnaphile) brought to my attention something Madge said 10 years ago in a 1998 VH1 special called "Madonna Rising." The show's host (and her BFF at the time) Rupert Everett asked Madonna whether she could see herself "like Mick Jagger, at age 50, still stomping around Madison Square Garden?" Her reply? "I do not." She went on to explain that while she didn't think there was a "stop date" for her, she did not see herself making pop music and videos in 10 years' time.
Ah yes. Well, none of us want to be held to things we say on tape. I am sure I have said things I no longer believe. However, when I brought this up at the very end of our interview last week (and remember now, this is after Madonna's rep had three times told me to wrap it up, and after Justin and Madonna had said they wanted to "go drink"), she denied having said it, telling me that in fact she had said she didn't see herself "running around in limousines" — and continued by telling me that I was "once again, not paying attention"!
Well, this time, Madge, I'm afraid ya did say it — we've got the tape!
But really, who cares? We should all be happy that she doesn't have an "end date." One of the last things she said to me was, "John, you need to live in the moment." I so do! I get focusing on the here and now, I get not looking back and moving forward. And I so get that age ain't nothing but a number. So I'll let Madonna have the final word: Not from the interview, but rather with one more lyric from her next single, "Give It 2 Me," that speaks for many of us:
"Don't stop me now, don't need to catch my breath/
I can go on and on and on/
When the lights go down and there's no one left/
I can go on and on and on."

Paradise refugees find homes

With the final show at the Paradise Lounge on Monday, several performers who had spring events lined up at the shuttered venue scrambled to find last-minute accommodations.

The Boston Babydolls, who were informed of the closing only hours before their performance last Sunday night, are in negotiations with a Fenway-area venue to keep their burlesque show in Boston. In the short term, the troupe is trekking down to Basta in Weymouth for an April 27 show.

“Basta had something of a rough reputation,” said Boston Babydoll ringleader Mr. Scratch. “The owner wanted to bring in some elegant entertainment, which is why he contacted us.”

The annual birthday bash for Anderson Mar of Dark Sky Productions was supposed to go down next Friday, but has since been moved to Thursday at its new home, the Cantab Lounge in Cambridge. The show features Flash in Blue, MELT and Lucretia’s Daggers.

Meanwhile, Damien Dempsey’s two-night stand at the Paradise Lounge for early May has been condensed into one show May 4 at T.T. the Bear’s Place in Cambridge. Original tickets will not be honored, according to thedise.com, and refunds are available at point of purchase.

Live Nation, which purchased the Paradise with local pub owner Joe Dunne last month, has remained tightlipped about the lounge’s future. In an e-mail from Live Nation public relations manager Heidi Collins, she would only say that “details will be forthcoming.”

Time to get your festival buzz on

Those chugging the Monster should look forward to July 16, when the Monster-sponsored Projekt Revolution Tour 2008 barges into Mansfield, featuring Linkin Park, Chris Cornell, the Bravery and a slew of emo-riffic second-stage acts.

Long after the Monster buzz wears off, the Rockstar Energy Mayhem festival crashes the Tweet on Aug. 5, with Slipknot, Disturbed and Mastodon heading up the dude-fest.

Amy Winehouse chops off her beehive

Troubled star Amy Winehouse has shocked fans by chopping off her trademark beehive hairstyle.
The 'Back To Black' singer has had her hair cut into a short crop, and has swapped her formerly dark locks for a peroxide blonde hairdo.
The new style is reported to have been the work of her hairdresser Alex Foden, who lives in the same east London apartment block as Winehouse.
A source tells British newspaper The Sun, "She just said she felt like it.  She'd thought about having a blonde beehive but decided on the shorter look."
A spokesperson for the star adds, "She wanted a new look for the New Year."

Once more with feeling: Oscar duo conquer New York

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Glen Hansard, armed with a weathered acoustic guitar and an ear-to-ear grin, walked onto the fully lit stage of Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall and addressed the 6,000 faces assembled in the cavernous space.

"Can you hear me okay?" asked the knowingly unmiced performer. The echoes of "No!" that rang from the audience didn't stop the Irish singer from launching into a spirited, unamplified rendition of "Say It To Me Now." The song grew from a modest whisper to a pleading scream that reached even the "cheap" seats.

From the outset last Monday, Hansard and his Czech-born partner Marketa Irglova, who won songwriting Oscars this year for the musical romance "Once," made a point of treating Radio City like a quaint club venue.

It was more than their charming pop melodies and quiet harmonies that helped create the intimacy. Throughout the set, the duo told endearing stories, invited friends and family members onstage for collaborations, changed the set list on a whim and led the audience in multiple sing-alongs. It may have been one of the biggest gigs (literally and figuratively) of their career, but the duo brought a palpable humility to the grandiose venue.

As expected, the set featured many songs from "Once," including crowd-favorites like "Lies," "When Your Mind's Made Up," their Oscar-winning ballad "Falling Slowly," and the audience-demanded novelty gem, "Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy."

The crowd was also treated to a lesser-known standouts, among them "Gold" (which featured a return appearance by the night's opening act, Interference) and several songs by the Frames (Hansard's other musical outfit). Irglova and her sister, who flew over from the Czech Republic for the show, performed a cover of Paul Giovanni's "Gently Johnny." But the evening's biggest applause was reserved for Hansard's raw, fiery rendition of Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks."

Still, it seemed the greatest awe was felt by the performers onstage, who often remarked on the surprising good fortune that had them headlining a venue that seemed almost out-of-reach when the pair made their New York debut in 2006.

"A couple years ago, we decided to kick our ball as hard as we could, and see how far it would go," Hansard said at one point during the show. "We were hoping it would reach the end of the garden, but we watched it go . . . across the street, over the next town, into a place we'd never even heard of before.

Martin Scorsese - Martin Scorsese Leaves Bob Marley Movie Project

Martin Scorsese is to be replaced by Jonathan Demme as director for a Bob Marley documentary.

The authorised film about the reggae legend is set for a February 6th, 2010 release to honour the 65th anniversary of Marley's birth.

But Scorsese, who had planned to follow his recent Rolling Stones documentary Shine A Light with the Marley movie, has been forced to withdraw from the project after "scheduling conflicts".

Demme, an Oscar-winner in 1992 for The Silence of the Lambs, will now step in to direct the film, produced by Tuff Gong Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment.

"I am thrilled and humbled by this extraordinary opportunity to participate in fashioning a motion picture that can serve as a worthy vessel for the spiritual and musical brilliance of Bob Marley," he said in a statement.

The No Woman No Cry star's son Ziggy, who is to executive produce the documentary, spoke of his excitement at Demme's involvement.

"His empathy with my father's body of work and his unique understanding of the musical documentary form makes me confident that this film will be the ultimate celebration of my father's life," he told the BBC.

As well as directing The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, Demme has a history of musically-themed films, having helmed the Talking Heads film Stop Making Sense and Neil Young: Heart of Gold.

Embodying the rags-to-riches rap pipe dream, Jay-Z pulled himself up by his bootstraps as a youth to finally become the regnant rapper of New York City and, in turn, a major-label executive following his ephemeral retirement from music-making. In the rouse of his 1996 debut, Fair Doubt, Jay-Z's albums sold millions upon millions with each liberation, and his endless parade of hits made him ubiquitous on urban radio and television video. He maintained a powerfully devoted fan cornerstone and challenged whatever rivals attempted to oust him from atop the tap biz, scotch most memorably with Nas. Jay-Z and his Roc-a-Fella associates greatly influenced the industry and conventional many of the trends that pervaded during the tardy '90s and early 2000s. He consistently worked with the hottest producers of the day (Clark Kent, DJ Premier, Teddy Riley, Trackmasters, Erick Sermon, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz), and if they weren't hot at the time, they probable would be subsequently (the Neptunes, Kanye West, Just Blaze, 9th Wonder). He likewise collaborated with the hottest rappers in the industry, everyone from East Coast coevals like the Notorious B.I.G. ("Brooklyn's Finest") and DMX ("Immediate payment, Money, Hoes"), to the topper rappers from the South (Ludacris, Missy Elliott) and the West Coast (Snooper Dogg, Too Short). After his self-declared retirement from rapping in 2003, he fictitious the presidency of the seminal rap label Def Jam and, as an manufacture executive, embarked on another phase in his famous life history.

Born and raised in the bumpy Marcy Projects of Brooklyn, NY, Jay-Z underwent some tough multiplication subsequently his father left his mother earlier the young rapper was even a stripling. Without a gentleman in the house, he became a self-supportive young, turning to the streets, where he before long made a call for himself as a fledging rapper. Known as "Jazzy" in his neighborhood, he presently sawed-off his byname to Jay-Z and did all he could to cave in into the rap game. As he vividly discusses in his lyrics, Jay-Z also became a street hustler about this time, doing what requisite to be through to make money. For a patch, he ran around with Jaz-O, aka Big Jaz, a small-time New York knocker with a record dispense merely few gross revenue. From Jaz he lettered how to sail through the pat industry and what moves to make. He also participated in the group Original Flavor for a short time. Jay-Z afterward distinct to make an nontraditional conclusion and commence his have label rather than sign with an effected tag like Jaz had done. Together with friends Damon Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke, he created Roc-a-Fella Records, a speculative strategy for cut out the wholesaler and fashioning money for himself. Once he establish a reputable distributor, Priority Records (and then by and by Def Jam), Jay-Z last had everything in plaza, including a debut album, Reasonable Doubt (1996).

Though Fair Doubt only reached numeral 23 on Billboard's album chart, Jay-Z's debut finally became recognised as an unquestioned classic among fans, many of whom conceive it his crowning achievement. Led by the hit unmarried "Ain't No Nigga," a duette featuring Foxy Brown, Reasonable Doubt slowly spread through New York; some listeners were drawn in because of magnanimous name calling like DJ Premier and the Notorious B.I.G., others by the gangsta motifs identical much in style at the time, placid others by Jay-Z himself. By the last of its firm run, Reasonable Doubt generated trinity more charting singles -- "Can't Knock the Hustle," which featured Mary J. Blige on the addict; "Dead Presidents," which featured a big sampling of "The World Is Yours," a 1994 hit by Nas; and "Feelin' It" -- and plant the stage for Jay-Z's follow-up, In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 (1997).

Peaking at issue trey on the Billboard album chart, In My Lifetime sold a lot more strongly than its predecessor. The album boasted pop-crossover producers such as Puff Daddy and Teddy Riley, and singles such as "Temperateness" and "The City Is Mine" indeed showcased a newfound embrace of pop crossover. Yet there were silent plentifulness of hard-hitting songs such as "Streets Is Watching" and "Rap Game/Crack Game" to lace In My Lifetime with gangsta rap as well as pop crossover. Jay-Z's next album, Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life (1998), released a twelvemonth after In My Lifetime, was lade with hit singles: "Can I Get A..." and "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)" bust the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, spell "Cash, Money, Hoes" and "Jigaboo What, Nigga Who" too charted. Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life all over up fetching a Grammy for Best Rap Album.

Like clockwork, Jay-Z returned a twelvemonth by and by with another album, Vol. 3: Life and Times of S. Carter (1999), which topped the Billboard 200 and spawned deuce hits: "Magnanimous Pimpin'" and "Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up)." The album was Jay-Z's near collaborative to date, featuring tenner guest vocalists and a roll call of sought after producers such as Dr. Dre and Timbaland. Jay-Z then scaled indorse a bit for Dynasty Roc la Familia (2000), his fifth album in as many days. The album showcased Roc-a-Fella's in-house rappers: Beanie Sigel guests on vII of the 16 tracks, Memphis Bleek guests on hexad, and both Amir and Freeway too make guest apperances. On Dynasty Roc la Familia, Jay-Z too began working with a few new producers: the Neptunes, Kanye West, and Just Blaze. The Neptunes-produced "I Just Wanna Love U (Turn over It 2 Me)" became a peculiarly vast hit single this go-round.

Jay-Z's side by side album, The Blueprint (2001), coagulated his place atop the New York rap scene upon its discharge in September. Prior to the album's outlet, the knocker had caused a touch in New York following his headlining performance at Hot 97's Summer Jam 2001, where he debuted the call "Takeover." The call features a abrasive verse ridiculing Prodigy of Mobb Deep, and Jay-Z accentuated his verbal violation (including the lines "You's a ballerina/I seen ya") by showcasing gigantic photos of an adolescent Prodigy in a dance outfit. The interlingual rendition of "Takeover" that later appeared on The Blueprint includes a third verse line, this one dissing Nas, wHO, in response to the Summer Jam performance, had called out Jay-Z, "the postiche king of New York," in a freestyle known as "Stillmatic." As expected, "Takeover" enkindled a sparring match with Nas, wHO responded with "Ethoxyethane." Jay-Z accordingly returned with a comeback, "Super Ugly," where he rapped over the beats to Nas' "Get under one's skin Ur Self a..." on the first verse line and Dr. Dre's "Unsound Intentions" on the minute. The to and fro tear created massive publicity for both Jay-Z and Nas. In addition to "Takeover," The Blueprint besides featured "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)," one of the year's biggest shoot songs, and the record album topped many year-end best-of charts.

Jay-Z capitalized on the runaway success of The Blueprint with a number of followup projects. He collaborated with the Roots for the Unplugged album (2001) and with R. Kelly for Best of Both Worlds (2002). He so went on to record, over the course of the year, 40 or so new tracks, 25 of which appeared on his side by side record, the bivalent album The Blueprint²: The Gift & the Curse (2002). Though billed as a continuation, The Blueprint² was well different from its harbinger. Whereas the first volume had been personal, considered, and focussed, the bit instead offered an unapologetically sprawl double-disc extravaganza showcasing remarkable telescope. As usual, it spawned a stream of singles, light-emitting diode by his 2Pac cover "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" (featuring his glamorous girlfriend, Beyoncé Knowles from Destiny's Child). Furthermore, Jay-Z guested on a partner off of summer 2003 hits: Beyoncé's chart-topping "Unbalanced in Love" and the Neptunes' Top Five hit "Frontin'."

It was and then that Jay-Z announced his imminent retirement after the freeing of ane more album. That LP, The Black Album (2003), was rush-released by Def Jam and soared to the top spot in the album charts at the end of the year. As always, it spawned a couple crowing hits -- "Soil Off Your Shoulder" and "99 Problems" -- and divine a popular mash-up bootleg, The Grey Album, by Danger Mouse. The subsequent year (2004) was a whirlwind for the self-effacing Jay-Z. He embarked on a farewell circuit that was topped off by an prodigal Madison Square Garden performance attested on the Fade to Black DVD, and he as well embarked on an ill-omened arena duty tour with the battlemented R. Kelly that resulted in an exchange of ugly multi-million-dollar lawsuits.

With his final album behind him and his reputation punter than ever, Jay-Z accepted an offer to wear the function of united States President at Def Jam Records. The seminal rap label was struggling and needful somebody to templet it through a jumpy transitional phase. Jay-Z accepted the challenge and took over the company began by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin rough 20 days in the beginning. (As part of its deal with Jay-Z, Def Jam's parent company, Universal, bought Roc-a-Fella, which resulted in some bitter among certain associates disorder by the buyout.) Considerable fanfare met the presidential inauguration, as Jay-Z became one of the few African-American major-label executives in the stage business, and he likewise became one of the few rappers to transition into that side of the line of work. Numerous rappers owned or operated their have boutique labels, only none had ever risen to such major-label high. And the rapper-turned-president didn't take his job lightly, either, at least judgement by his initial year in office. Within months of assuming his situation, he fostered a string of newfound talents -- Young Jeezy, Teairra Marí, Rihanna, and Bobby Valentino, all of whom enjoyed considerable commercial success -- and only had a few setbacks (disappointing returns on albums by Memphis Bleek and Young Gunz).

In 2005 Jay-Z came out of retirement for the I Declare War concert in New York City. The challenging evidence featured a parade of high profile edgar Guest stars, including Diddy, T.I., Kanye West, and in a peacemaking move, Nas. With this longstanding bitch squashed, Jay-Z proclaimed he was approaching out of retirement for good. He made it official when Kingdom Come hit the shelves in late 2006. Less than a year later, Jay-Z returned with some other post-retirement album, American Gangster (2007), this one elysian by the cooccurring film of the same identify.
