British singers in global glory

BRITS can’t rustle up a Euro 2008 footie side but when it comes to music we
are the world champs.

Our pop talent has four out of five of the biggest-selling albums on the
planet this year.

Scrap-happy AMY WINEHOUSE leads the charge.

Her Back To Black has shifted 3.67million copies in the past six months —
pushing its sales to a total of 9.78million.

Comeback kings COLDPLAY are second with 2.6million copies of Viva La
Vida sold.

That’s despite the band, fronted by CHRIS MARTIN only releasing
it last month. X Factor queen LEONA LEWIS is third with 2.4million
Spirit CDs snapped up.

Yank strummer JACK JOHNSON slips in at fourth, but Welsh songbird DUFFY
pips MADONNA to fifth place with 2.25million sales of debut
collection Rockferry.

Domestic acts have spent much of the last decade in the shadow of big-hitting
American rivals such as PINK, BRITNEY SPEARS and CHRISTINA
AGUILERA but now the tables have been firmly turned.
ALICIA KEYS, MARIAH CAREY, LIL’ WAYNE and MICHAEL
JACKSON’s re-released Thriller album make up the rest of the top ten.
Now for the World Cup...
