Mexican Folk Icon Tavira Dead At 84
One-handed Mexican folk star ANGEL TAVIRA has died from kidney problems in a Mexico City hospital. He was 84.
Tavira, who won a Cannes Film Festival prize for his first movie The Violin two years ago (06), lost his right hand in a fireworks accident when he was a teenager.
Despite his handicap, he became a beloved violinist.
Mexican director Fernando Vargas made a documentary about Tavira in 2002, and two years later cast him in the fictional film The Violin. The role won him an acting prize at Cannes.
Tavira is survived by his wife and 12 children from two marriages.
