Mosquito with West Nile virus reported in Toronto

Toronto health officials say they have found the summer's first case of West Nile virus in a mosquito.

"The positive mosquito result reinforces the need for the public to take precautions to safeguard themselves from West Nile virus," said Dr. Howard Shapiro, the city's associate medical officer of health, in a prepared statement.

The overall risk to people is low, according to public health. But the department is urging people with compromised immune systems to take precautions.

It recommends people use insect repellent and wear light-coloured clothing in areas with mosquitoes and remove standing water around homes to reduce breeding.
